YEAR 1

This is our last newsletter for Term 2. It has been a wonderful term and most children have progressed well in all areas of the curriculum. In Maths, students have been measuring length of objects in class, using informal units.

In English, we continued our focus on Explanation texts. Students practised this text type by writing about the life cycle of a butterfly, “Why do birds have feathers?”, “How do cats show their feelings?

In Geography, our unit on “Distinctive features of places within our local community” culminated in the presentation of the School Landscape diorama.

Students also enjoyed painting during the Art sessions. They had fun making symmetrical butterflies and also painting a landscape.

During the Sewing elective, we have been making a drawstring bag and I am really impressed with the skills that they have achieved in a few sessions.

Home Reading

Thank you so much to the parents who are reading with their child at home. I request all parents to do this and ensure that your child’s little yellow book is being filled out regularly.

Some tips with home reading:

Look at the pictures and discuss them in depth before reading.

When they have an unfamiliar word, allow your child time to sound out the word and see if they can get it.

Allow time to discuss the book at the end of the reading time and ask questions.

It is important when reading with your child that you get them to retell the story and ask them questions relating to what has been read in order to ensure they have understood the text. Over the holidays, students are expected to continue to read each day. Your ongoing support and efforts are greatly appreciated.

Have a safe and relaxing break!!
